It’s very difficult to stop overeating with willpower alone, since willpower relies on conscious effort and does not address the subconscious reasons for overeating. Subconscious programmes are taken on at a very young age and become deeply ingrained. Links between food and emotions go back to birth and we tend to associate food, or certain foods, with feeling loved, nurtured and safe. Emotional eating patterns are created at an early age. Maybe you were given sweets or cakes to make you feel better when hurt or upset – or for good behaviour.

Another important factor in weight gain is what you eat, rather than how much you eat. Do you eat a lot of highly processed foods to save time? These types of food contain chemicals, pesticides, high amounts of sugar, overly refined starches and unhealthy fats, all of which can cause sugar cravings and cause havoc with the body’s hormones and metabolism. Some chemicals can even trick your mind into thinking you’re still hungry.
